Lets talk about our favorite fur babies and using essential oils around them!
FIrst of all, I am so glad that you are taking some steps to learn about the safety of essential oils with your dogs. There is A LOT of misconception out there and I am here to help navigate through all that conflicting information!
The most important thing when it comes to using essential oils around your pets-QUALITY MATTERS! I cannot express this enough. If you are using store bought oils, even if they say 100% pure or organic or 100% natural, almost 90% of the time they aren't. Essential oils are a very deceptive market because its a free for all when it comes to marketing. Companies can pretty much put whatever they want on the bottle and it doesn't necessarily depict what's on the inside. Many essential oils are adulterated with chemicals that are very toxic for pets to breathe in. Scary right?!
Making sure your oils are Certified Pure Tested Grade is very important. I truly would only ever trust doTERRA's oils around any of my fur babies.
Also something very unique for an essential oil company is that doTERRA has an entire Veterinarian Board. Its a panel of renowned Veterinarians that helps us learn how to use these oils safely and effectively -so cool right?!
One of the Vets on that board that I follow is Dr. Janet Roark (aka The Essential Oil Vet) and she is my favorite! She puts out tons of great free info about using essential oils on animals. Dr. Roark has been practicing Veterinary Medicine for over 15 years and has helped tens of thousands of people use natural options including essential oils to improve the quality of life and wellness of their animals. She also is the author of the book Essential Oil for Pets Guidebook and I definitely recommend buying it. She has been featured in international publications read by hundreds of thousands of essential oil users. She speaks at events throughout the country and internationally on the topic of essential oils and animals. So yeah-I trust her!!
Now lets talk about some FAQs with animals and oils!
Yes! But here are a few little tips:
When diffusing, only use 3-4 drops of oil in a water based diffuser on an intermittent setting. doTERRA's diffusers all have an intermittent setting.
Make sure your diffuser is in an area where your pet cannot knock it over.
- Diffuse in an open area with the door open. That way your pet can leave whenever it wants.
- If your pet is sensitive to an oil you are diffusing, stop the diffuser and get your pet some fresh air.
- Contact your veterinarian if you are concerned.
- It is good to be careful using oils around animals, but let’s not get overly paranoid about it. Follow some common sense guidelines and rest assured you are actually helping them, not hurting them!
This means to not put the essential oil on neat (or by itself). You can use something called a carrier oil to help lessen the intensity. You can use carrier oils such as Fractionated Coconut Oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Almond Oil, etc. to dilute your essential oil.
Start out with your oils MORE diluted when introducing Essential Oils topically to your pet.
Remember, each animal is an individual and your pet may be more or less sensitive than others. Observe their behavior – they will tell you! We all know our babies, you will be able to tell if they are bothered by an essential oil.
Oils to Avoid with Dogs
Most doTERRA oils are perfectly safe and effective for dogs but here are some oils to avoid topically and internally: Birch, Melaleuca (Tea Tree), and Wintergreen. And then use caution with hot oils such as Oregano, Cassia, Cinnamon, Clove, Rosemary, and Thyme.
When introducing oils to animals, I love doing the self selection method. Put not even a drop in your hand and let your animal come smell it and you will be able to tell if they like it or not (or sometimes they just don't care either way haha).
Ways to Use With Pets
You can use them topically by putting 1-2 drops in your hands, rub them together and pet them along their spine.
You can also do this topical method and massage the oils right into the pads of their feet. If your animal does not enjoy his feet touched then do not use this method.
Oils can be so beneficial for internal use on animals. I have seen some super amazing results with arthritis, seizures and all kinds of issues in animals.
If the oil has the supplemental facts on the bottle and indicates its safe for internal use, then you may give it internally to your animal (usually no more than 1-2 drops). You can do this by putting some in their drinking water or mix with food.
